Our Project
Smartpack is the name of our project. Our prototype is a self-carrying backpack with many different aspects that maximise effectivity during school days and help students. When we started brainstorming, we decided to solve a problem that students experience worldwide.
Our group was planning on solving several problems. The main issue we were trying to solve is the serious problem caused for students because of their heavy backpacks. Either for school items, travel, or outings, kids are constantly using backpacks to get around with their belongings. These heavy backpacks are constantly affecting spinal growth in youths. Another issue we were trying to solve is the problem of students coming to school unprepared because their laptops aren't charged, or that their means of communication are blocked because of their devices running out of charge. Not only are we finding solutions to these problems, but we are going to also make the backpack much easier to manage and help students in their daily school life.
What Triggered this Choice of Problem?
We decided on this idea when we complained about the heavy weights we had to carry home on our backs each day because of the books, notebooks, and electronics we had to take to and from school in our backpacks. We wanted to create a solution to heavy backpacks, prevent issues in the spine, shoulders, and neck that heavy backpacks tend to cause. Another idea hit us while we were researching. During these classes, a particular group member's laptop ran out of battery. It lead us to making the bag "eco-friendly" by using solar panels to charge your devices.
In the end, we decided that we would build a backpack that would not only be able to “carry itself”, but also to maximise effectivity in an average school day by containing a solar powered power bank that can simultaneously charge your computer and phone.
